Museo Nacional del Prado. One of the world's great art museums, the Prado holds masterworks by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, Rubens, and Bosch across palatial neoclassical galleries. Free admission runs Monday–Saturday 6–8 PM and Sundays 5–7 PM, though queues form well before the doors open.
Parque del Retiro. A UNESCO World Heritage Site (jointly with Paseo del Prado since 2021), Retiro spans 125 hectares of formal gardens, a grand rowboat lake, and the breathtaking iron-and-glass Crystal Palace. Locals picnic here on weekends and vendors set up beside the Estanque Grande.
Palacio Real (Royal Palace). The largest royal palace in Western Europe by floor area, the Palacio Real dazzles with 3,000 rooms, a priceless armory, and gardens overlooking the Sierra de Guadarrama. The Solemn Changing of the Guard takes place the first Wednesday of each month on the Plaza de la Armería.
Museo Nacional Reina Sofía. Spain's premier modern-art museum is home to Picasso's Guernica, Dalí's The Great Masturbator, and a vast Joan Miró collection. Free entry is offered Monday, Wednesday–Friday and Saturday evenings 7–9 PM, and Sunday mornings 10 AM–2:30 PM.
Templo de Debod. An authentic 2nd-century BC Egyptian temple gifted to Spain by Egypt in 1968 now stands in Parque del Oeste, reflected in a shallow pool with the Madrid skyline behind it. Admission is free, and the west-facing terrace delivers the most photographed sunset in the city.
Plaza Mayor. Madrid's grand 17th-century arcaded square sits at the heart of Habsburg Madrid, ringed by ochre-red buildings with 237 balconies and the equestrian statue of Felipe III at its center. It remains a living stage for street performers, café terraces, and the city's oldest Christmas market.
Mercado de San Miguel. A beautifully restored 1916 iron-and-glass market beside Plaza Mayor, Mercado de San Miguel draws more than 7 million visitors a year with its stalls of freshly shucked oysters, Iberian ham, artisan cheeses, croquetas, and Spanish wines. Open daily 10 AM to midnight (1 AM Friday–Saturday).
El Rastro Sunday Flea Market. Every Sunday and public holiday from 9 AM to 3 PM, the medieval streets of La Latina fill with more than 1,000 stalls selling antiques, vinyl records, vintage clothing, and artisan crafts across Ribera de Curtidores and surrounding lanes. It is Spain's most famous open-air market.
